Why should happily married couples mediate?
Whenever possible, Mediator Matthew House emphasizes prevention over cure. Even the happiest couples can benefit from an occasional "checkup" to ensure that they see eye-to-eye, not only on the issues that they already understand, but also on the ones that they have not yet had to address, such as educational funding for a child who is approaching college age. The mediation process resolves a dispute before it even has a chance to become a dispute. After the mediator, as a neutral facilitator, has helped the parties address practical concerns, the spouses may wish to consult with their own individual lawyers who can provide any desired legal advice, as legal advice is not a part of the mediation process.
