Why should divorcing couples mediate?

Divorcing couples should choose mediation because it is a nicer, quicker, and cheaper alternative to a litigated, contested, lawyer-facilitated divorce.  Mediation protects the family's interests by promoting win-win outcomes, in contrast to the competition of the courtroom.  Mediation is also far less expensive, in most cases, than each spouse retaining a lawyer.  Mediation is a much shorter process, yet it results in the same finality as using a lawyer or arguing before a judge, although it is advisable to consult with a lawyer at some point in the process to review the tentative agreement before finalization.
